I
am a retired principal who started carving about 25 years ago. I have
a wonderful wife of 51 years and two grown children who both live in
Colorado. As a young boy, I thought I would like to be a commercial
artist. Life takes many twists and turns. I joined the Navy after high
school and served as a medic during the end of the Korean War. When
I was discharged from the Navy, I decided to go to college on the GI
Bill and enrolled in a pre-med program. An unfortunate family tragedy
occurred and I changed my goal. I eventually became a Biology teacher.
I left the classroom to become a principal and spent 28 years in administration.
It was a little later in my life that I began to carve. My father became
ill and started to carve while he was recuperating. My dad encouraged
me to start carving and we started to carve together. My 1st cousin,
Bob Guge, who passed away some years ago, was a bird carver and carved
miniture birds. His oldest son, Bob, is now a famous bird carver. So,
I guess I inherited some art genes that exist on my father's side of
the family. We moved from Illinois in 1978, as I was hired to be a principal
in Eagle Vail, Colorado. Nan and I eventually moved out of the mountains
and now reside in Morrison, Colorado. The rest is History.
